Finding That Book

Mindfulness is a subject I had just learned, and was looking for ways to practice it. I figured a book store should have some practical guides and how-to books. Around that time I was going through a lot mentally. Stress from work and areas of my life were taking a heavy toll, accompanied by sadness and loss of hope. I was looking for a ladder to get me out of the hole I unknowingly dug myself in. I didn’t know because I had not discovered mindfulness.

That ladder was the insight and practice of being in the moment. The book I found was called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It revealed to me that my thinking was repetitive and I was always worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. Only after learning how to be mindful did the mental noise in my head shut off. There was no more labeling and trying to make sense of everything. I learned how to be in the moment as it is, without thought or judgement, and noticing details around me. That’s the essentials of practicing mindfulness.

This book really did change my life. I can honestly say that had I not discovered it, I’d be substantially more stressed and missing out on the beuty of life, especially the small things that many of us ignore everyday. The incessant thinking of the mind can lead to anxiety, and many of us aren’t even aware of it. I recommend looking up mindfulness-based stress reduction (mbsr). A program that’s built around mindfulness, meditation, and awareness.

That book helped break me out of my old way of thinking which was constant analyzing, judging, and ultimately worrying. I’ve implemented everything I could from this book and it’s helped in tremendous ways. I can focus and see more clearly when I choose to. Whenever life gets stressful, which happens to everyone, I go back to what I learned about mindfulness. Check out The Power of Now and witness the benefits of mindfulness. It really helps.
