The Financial Times recently reported that apple is going to spend 500 million plus for games on its arcade gaming service. Sources close to Apple are saying developers who choose to have their game only on apple devices will receive an incentive. Apple is also requiring mobile exclusivity, so games can’t be published on Google Play, but can be on Xbox, Playstation, and Switch.

Apple Arcade will be released this fall with experts predicting a $10 monthly price. According to Amir Ghodrati from App Annie, “People aren’t as willing to pay up front for games on Apple, so having a venue for these games is going to be good for everybody.” Publishers working for the platform include Cartoon Network, Giant Squid, Konami, Lego, Sega, Bossa Studios, Klei Entertainment, and more.

“The App Store is the world’s biggest and most successful game platform.”, said Phil Schiller of Apple’s worldwide marketing. According to newzoo, even with PC and game consoles, mobile gaming still accounts for over 50% total gaming market share worldwide. It’s expected to grow to 60% by 2021, so it makes sense Apple is investing so much time and money and now is the time.
